Las Vegas, New Mexico - The New Mexico Highlands University football team came out on the short end of a 42-7 decision against South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers raced out to a 21-0 lead at the half and never looked back on Saturday afternoon at Sanchez Family Stadium.
With the loss the Cowboys fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in RMAC play. South Dakota Mines improves to 2-2 and 1-1 in conference play.
As the score indicates, the Hardrockers dominated the game statistically. They out-gained NMHU 403 yards to 244 and had the edge in first downs 23-15. South Dakota Mines forced the game's only turnover, recovering a NMHU fumble mid-way through the third quarter.
Freshman
Cayden Walton scored the only touchdown of the afternoon for the Cowboys on a nine yard run late in the fourth quarter, capping an 11 play, 82 yard drive.
Norman Malik led NMHU in rushing, gaining 40 yards on eight carries. Quarterback
Joey Cave was 9-16 passing the ball for 111 yards. The leading receiver for the Cowboys was
Amin Oglesby who had three catches for 54 yards.
Defensively
Devin Coney had nine total tackles including two tackles for loss.
