Durango, Colorado - The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season at the South Central Region Crossover in Durango with a 74-63 loss to Eastern New Mexico on Friday afternoon.
The Greyhounds led by seven at the end of the opening quarter 22-15. NMHU tied the contest at 22-22 at the 7:27 mark of the second quarter when
Eva Ongoongotau scored on an assist from
Juliana Aragon. ENMU led 36-32 at the half-time break.
A big third quarter saw the Greyhounds push the lead to 56-43 heading into the fourth quarter. The Cowgirls got within a point of ENMU when Aragon knocked down a jumper to make the score 61-60 with 5:09 remaining in the game. That's as close as NMHU would get as the Greyhounds closed out the game on a 13-1 run.
Juliana Aragon led the Cowgirls with 13 points and four assists.
Amaris Valadez,
Kapiolani Anitielu, and
Eva Ongoongotau each scored 11 points. Valadez led the NMHU with eight rebounds.
The Cowgirls return to action tomorrow afternoon when they play Western New Mexico in Durango. Tip-off is set for 2:00 pm.
