Cowgirls Top Orediggers in OT On Saturday

Las Vegas, New Mexico - Juliana Aragon hit a driving layup as two Colorado School of Mines defenders covered her with 2.0 seconds remaining in overtime to secure a 74-73 Cowgirls' win on Saturday afternoon in the Wilson Complex.

With the win, NMHU is 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC.

The NMHU win tied the all-time series between the two schools at 35-35 and was the Cowgirls first win over the Orediggers since December 6, 2014.

The Cowgirls held a 37-26 lead at halftime but the Oediggers battled back and outscored NMHU 42-21 in the second half. The visitors led the game 68-66 late but Amaris Valadez knocked down a jumper with 2.4 seconds remaining to force overtime.

Aniya Johnson scored the first two baskets for NMHU in extra time before Aragon's game winning field goal.

"What a big win for our team," said Head Coach Lindsey Fearing.  "10 years is a long time to not get a win against a team.  We had a lot of different people step up today.  I'm just a proud coach!"

Three Cowgirls scored in double figures led by Juliana Aragon's 22 points. Aniya Johnson scored 21 points while Aspen Salazar had 13. Aragon had a game high seven assists and Johnson had a team high seven rebounds.

For the second consecutive game the Cowgirls shot 50% from the floor going 30 for 60 against the Orediggers.

Colorado School of Mines held a 30-24 edge on the glass.

The Cowgirls play their first RMAC road contest of the season in Durango against Fort Lewis on Tuesday at 5:30 pm. The next home game is on Saturday when Adams State visits historic Las Vegas for a 1:00 pm game.
