Chadron, Nebraska - The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team got back in the win column on Friday evening with a 71-66 win at Chadron State. With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 5-18 overall and 4-13 in the RMAC. The Eagles fall to 6-15 and 4-13 in conference play.
Chadron State jumped out to a 15-9 lead after one quarter of play, but the Cowgirls battled back and took a 29-25 by outscoring the Eagles 20-10 in quarter number two.
The Cowgirls continued the solid play after halftime and pushed their lead to as many as 13 points late in the third quarter. Key defensive stops late in the game allowed the Cowgirls to hang on for the win on the road 71-66.
Eva Ongoongotau scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to record the double-double to lead the Cowgirls.
Juliana Aragon added 16 points and five assists while
Vanessa Herrera was also in double figures with 10 points.
NMHU shot 38% from the floor and 75% from the free throw line and won the battle of the boards 47-38.
The Cowgirls are in Lakewood tomorrow for a 5:00 pm game with Colorado Christian. The Cougars lost to CSU-Pueblo 79-70 on Friday.
