Las Vegas, New Mexico - Nationally ranked Western Colorado was at Sanchez Family Stadium this afternoon and came away with a 53-12 win. The Cowboys fall to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the RMAC. The Mountaineers, ranked 14th in this week's American Football Coaches Association Division II poll, are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Western Colorado accounted for all of the scoring in the opening half as they jumped out to a half-time lead.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring two and a half minutes into the third quarter with a touchdown. The Cowboys responded with a seven play 75 yard scoring drive of their own capped off by a six yard run by freshman
Waika Crawford. After a pair of Western Colorado field goals, freshman
Tevita Valeti scored on a three yard run for the Cowboys.
Valeti had 15 carries on the afternoon for 105 yards. Crawford went for 34 yards on nine rushes, he added 95 yards through the air.
Juniors
Fabiano Valdez led the Cowboys in tackles with seven while
Jagger Mosqueda added six tackles.
Mason McChriston picked off a Mountaineers pass in the end zone for the Cowboys first interception of the season.
The Cowboys travel up Interstate 25 next Saturday for a 2:00 pm game with CSU-Pueblo. Kick-off is at 2:00 pm.
