Western Colorado Top Cowboys

Gunnison, Colorado - Western Colorado used a strong second half to race past New Mexico Highlands 30-3 on Saturday afternoon in Gunnison. The loss drops the Cowboys to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC while the nationally ranked Mountaineers improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The Cowboys got on the scoreboard first late in the opening quarter when freshman Alexzander Britt knocked through a 31 yard field goal to cap off a 19 play drive.

Western Colorado scored 10 points in the second quarter to grab a 10-3 lead at the halftime intermission. A pair of Mountaineer touchdowns in the third quarter put the game out of reach.

The Mountaineers out gained the Cowboys 315 to 292 and held the edge in turnovers three to one.

Quarterback Ike Udengwu was six for twelve for 60 yards with one interception. Freshman Colin Stucki came in late and was one for three for 39 yards with 57 yards rushing.

Jeffery Jones had 57 yards on 12 carries and Mason Peterson went for 44 yards on eight carries.

Awsten Turnbow had eight tackles to lead the Cowboys defensively. Corey Martin had two sacks in the game.

The Cowboys return to action next Saturday afternoon when they welcome nationally ranked CSU-Pueblo to historic Las Vegas for a 1:00 pm game.
