Grand Junction, Colorado - The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team dropped a 7-0 decision to Colorado Mesa University Friday afternoon at Community Hospital Unity Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks (7-3-1, 5-1-0 RMAC) controlled the opening half, scoring three times while holding the Cowgirls (0-10-1, 0-6-0 RMAC) without a shot over the first 45 minutes.
Colorado Mesa opened the scoring in the 11th minute and doubled its advantage just five minutes later. The Mavericks added a third goal in the 36th minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The Mavericks extended their lead early in the second half with a goal in the 47th minute before adding two more in the 52nd and 71st minutes. Colorado Mesa closed out the scoring in the 87th minute.
Despite facing consistent offensive pressure, New Mexico Highlands goalkeeper Peyton Greener recorded a season-high 14 saves in just over 70 minutes of action. JaNae Romero entered in relief and added two saves as the Cowgirls finished with 16 stops.
New Mexico Highlands generated all four of its shots in the second half, with Maya Miljatovich accounting for two attempts. Ninon Rigal and Tammia Thorpe added one shot apiece, with Thorpe recording the Cowgirls' lone shot on goal.
Colorado Mesa finished with a 39-4 advantage in shots, including a 23-1 margin in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Cowgirls continue their road trip Sunday, October 11, when they travel to Salt Lake City to face Westminster University, 3-0 winners over Adams State on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.Â
