Denny Doombos begins his third season as the Cowboys' defensive coordinator.

Doornbos was previously at Bryant University coaching fullbacks and defensive ends under Marty Fine.

Doornbos spent four seasons at The Citadel starting out as the assistant defensive coordinator/defensive line coach. In 2012, he was named the defensive coordinator/assistant head coach/defensive line coach. He coached three All-Conference defensive linemen in the four years he was there.

In 2009, Doornbos spent a season at St. Norbert College as defensive coordinator, where they had a 9-1 record.

Doornbos in 2003 was at Northern Illinois University coaching linebackers. This was the first team in MAC history to beat three BCS schools in the same year (beat Alabama, Maryland and Iowa State). The Huskies finished the year with a 10-2 record.

From 2004-07, he was promoted to defensive coordinator at NIU and continued coaching the linebackers. He had four all-conference linebackers in five seasons. In 2005, their defense was No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference for scoring defense.

Prior to arriving at Northern Illinois University, Doornbos spent 14 years at the United States Military Academy (Army), including 10 years as the defensive coordinator. In 1996, when Army went 10-2 and lost a berth to the Independence Bowl against Auburn University, the unit was ranked No. 6 nationally in rushing defense (89.0 ypg), No. 9 in total defense (256.3 ypg) and No. 18 in scoring defense (17.5 ppg). In addition to his role as defensive coordinator, he coached the defensive ends from 1988-99 after spending his first two seasons (1986-87) as the tight ends coach. That year, his tight end, Rob Dickerson, was named All-East. In the 14 years Doornbos coached at Army, they beat archrival Navy nine times.

From 1983-85, Doornbos was the defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach at the UTEP.

In 1982, Doornbos worked with the inside linebackers under legendary coach Bo Schembechler at the University of Michigan when the Wolverines won the Big Ten Conference title and played UCLA in the Rose Bowl.

In 1981, Doornbos coached the defensive line at Kent State University, and in 1980, coached the outside linebackers at Boston College.

From 1978-79, Doornbos was at the University of Illinois as the head JV coach and assisted with the defensive line.

His coaching career began at Western Michigan University after an injury ended his playing career. As an undergraduate, Doornbos assisted with the secondary, inside linebackers, and offensive line.

In 1978, Doornbos graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education from Western Michigan University.

As four-sport letterman in football (3), basketball (3), baseball (2), and track (1) at Jenison High School (Michigan), Doornbos was an honorable mention all-state linebacker and tight end as a senior.

Doornbos is from Jenison, Michigan and is married to the former Helen Sandford of Winchester, MA. They have two sons, Blaik and Darik.
