Garett Sherman

Garett Sherman enters his fourth season as the head women’s basketball coach at New Mexico Highlands University.

During his first season the Cowgirls did not compete due to COVID. In year one Coach Sherman took over a 1-26 program and showed improvement finishing 6-22. In 2022-2023 Coach Sherman’s Cowgirls finished 14-14 which is the best record for the women’s basketball program since the 2011-12 team finished 13-13.

Sherman spent seven years at the junior college level as a head women’s basketball coach at Allegany College of Maryland and Western Wyoming Community College earning three NJCAA Region Coach of the Year awards. His teams were consistently ranked in the nation’s Top 20 polls and won three region championships, with two national tournament appearances.

In 2017, Sherman spent a year as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Maine where the Black Bears won the American East Regular Season and Tournament Championship sending them to the NCAA National Tournament.

Garett received his Bachelor’s Degree in health and physical education in 2003 before earning his Master’s of Education in Administration and Supervision in 2005 from Frostburg State University.

Sherman and his wife Ayoola have three children: Trey, Cameron and Iyla.
