Volunteer Coach Howard Dunbar is in his sixth season working with the New Mexico Highlands track and field teams in the throws, joining the program for the 2010-2011 season.
 
In his time working with the Cowgirls, he has mentored four athletes to six Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Individual Titles and 10 different athletes to 19 All-Conference honors in both the indoor and outdoor RMAC championships. He has guided the Cowgirls to the javelin title each of the last five seasons (Carissa Alexander in 2011 and 2012, Michelle Traynham in 2013 and 2015 and Salcia Slack 2014). Also outdoors, Lina Robertson captured the hammer throw RMAC Championship in 2014.
 
In the indoor season in 2015, Robertson broke the school record in the weight throw at the RMAC Indoor Championships (16.78 meters) while outdoors, Traynham and Piper Mullins earned All-Conference honors in the javelin. Traynham and Erin Carrica moved in to the top-10 performance lists in the discus at Highlands.

Finally, Traynham became the first All-American thrower in school history in 2015, finishing 12th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.


In 2012, the Cowgirls’ Kemoy Christie became the first thrower under Dunbar’s watch to participate in the NCAA Championships, the first discus NCAA qualifier in school history. That same season, Alexander became the first Cowgirl to provisionally qualify for the NCAA championships in the school history. Last season, Highlands boasted three throwers in four events that participated at the NCAA Outdoor Championships (Slack in the shot put, Traynham in the javelin and Robertson in the shot put and hammer throw).
