Entering his 13th season at New Mexico Highlands University, Steve Jones has compiled an overall record of 380 wins and 294 losses (.563). Jones’s Cowboy teams have appeared in RMAC post-season play-offs in 10 of his 12 seasons, winning the RMAC tournament in 2000 and 2005. His teams have participated in the NCAA Division II Western Regionals, appearing in 2001, 2005 and 2009. In 2001, the Cowboys established a school record for wins with 41. Jones’ teams have been consistently ranked near the top in several NCAA Division II offensive categories.
Jones has produced several all-conference and all-regional players. Several of his Cowboy players have signed professional contracts.
Coach Jones is most proud of the fact that his NMHU Baseball program has maintained over a 3.0 GPA for most of his 13 year tenure at NMHU. Five Cowboy baseballers have been named the RMAC / NMHU Scholar Athlete of the Year while Jones has been at the helm of the NMHU baseball program.
Prior to coming to NMHU, Coach Jones was an assistant at the University of California-Davis where he was in charge of offense. The Aggies won conference championships in 1993 and 1994, and received bids to the NCAA Division II Western Regionals in 1993, 1994, and 1995, finishing 2nd twice, winning the regional in 95, and placing 5th in the NCAA Division II World Series. In 1994, Major League teams drafted three players that Jones helped coach.
Prior to his stint at UC-Davis, Jones served as the head assistant at California State University, Chico for four years, winning the conference championship, and advancing to the NCAA Division II Western Regionals in 1997. In his 22 seasons as a coach at 3 NCAA DII universities, Coach Jones has been involved in over 700 wins.
Jones finished his playing career at Fort Hays State University earning honorable mention All-American honors in 1980. Jones graduated from California State University, Chico in 1988, receiving a BA in Physical Education.
Coach Jones' family includes partner Maria and children Billy (22) attending Vocational School in Sacramento, Stephanie (21) a Senior at the University of San Francisco, Gabriella (17) a Senior at Springer H.S, and Ben (15) a Sophomore at Springer H.S.
