Cowboys Split First Road Series of 2010

Cowboys Fall at CCU 65-61, But Get Back Up by Dropping CSM 76-73

The NMHU Cowboys split their first road series of the New Year as they fell to the Colorado Christian Cougars on 1/8 by a final score of 65-61 and rode a second half surge to come out on top against the Colorado School of Mines OreDiggers by a final score of 76-73. The Cowboys are now 8-5 on the season and 2-3 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will be in action again on 1/15 when they play host to the Metro State College Roadrunners.

The Cowboys started their first RMAC of 2010 on a shaky note as they struggled with the Colorado Christian University Cougars. The Cowboys struggled from the field with a 32.7% shooting percentage for the game and a 22.7% three-point percentage. The Cowboys would score a season low 61 points in their fifth loss of the season.

High scorer for the Cowboys against the Cougars was Roman Andrade. Andrade would score a game high 23 points for the Cowboys. Andrade added in seven rebounds and three assists for the night. The only other Cowboy in double figures wasChop Tang. Tang finished the night with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Cowboys then came out with a purpose on 1/9 as they took on the OreDiggers from the Colorado School of Mines. The Cowboys would struggles early with the OreDiggers as they would never lead in the first half. The Cowboys actually trailed by as much as 12 points in the first half and would shave the CSM lead to six as they went into the halftime break trailing 38-32. The Cowboys would then tighten up the second half and continue to play catch-up, but within the final two minutes the Cowboys would tie it up at 67 a piece with a Chris Dunn free-throw. The Cowboys and OreDiggers would trade possessions, but in the final 30 seconds Chop Tang came through with a clutch three-pointer that would spell doom for CSM as the Cowboys took the lead 70-67. The Cowboys would ice the win with some impressive free throw shooting as the Cowboys finished the game hitting six of six free throws to retain the lead and come back to Las Vegas with the win by a final score of 76-73.

As a team the Cowboys bettered their efforts form the night before by finishing with a 43% shooting percentage from the field and a 57.1% shooting percentage from the three-point line. The biggest stat of the night would have to be the Cowboys 84% free-throw shooting percentage as they sank 26 of 31 free throws for the night.

Leading scorer for the Cowboys was Chop Tang with 20 points. Tang also added in six rebounds in his efforts. Other Cowboys in double figures were Roman Andrade and Mindaugas Markevicius. Andrade finished the night with 18 points, three rebounds and three assists. Markevicius finished with 10 points, four rebounds and one steal.

The Cowboys will be in the friendly confines of the John A. Wilson Complex for the next RMAC weekend series. The Cowboys will play host to Metro State College on 1/15 and Regis University on 1/16; both games are set for an 8:00pm tip-off.
