The Cowgirl Volleyball team got a taste of the competitiveness in the RMAC this weekend as they travelled to the East Division of the RMAC to begin RMAC play. The Cowgirls came home only winning one set out of their three matches.
First up for the Cowgirls was the, National powerhouse, University of Nebraska- Kearny Lopers. The Cowgirls lost in three sets with scores of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-12.
Kelsey Groff was the leading lady for the Cowgirls with four kills and a pair of blocks.
Darian Mullen had seven digs on the night for the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls committed 21 errors while the Lopers had only 11 errors.
The Cowgirls then took on the Chadron State Eagles on the following night. The Cowgirls came out with a fight against the Eagles but weren't able to come through with the win. The Eagles won in three sets with scores of 37-35, 25-15 and 25-19.
In the first game against the Eagles, the Cowgirls made a rally to tie the game at 21-21. The next ten plays would go back and forth between the Eagles and Cowgirls. Leading the Cowgirls this go around was
Sarah Dirmeyer and Mullen with 11 kills apiece.
Ashley Nugent led the Cowgirls in digs with 17. The Cowgirls had 20 errors to the Eagles' 19.
Last on the schedule for the Cowgirls' long road trip were the Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs. The Cowgirls took the Mountain Lions to four sets but weren't able to pull off the win. The Mountain Lions won 3-1 with scores of 25-18 (UCCS), 25-23 (UCCS), 26-24 (NMHU) and 25-17 (UCCS).
Mullen was again the Cowgirls standout with 15 kills and 3 blocks. Dirmeyer was a defensive force for the Cowgirls with 10 blocks, seven assisted and 3 solo. All of the Cowgirls who saw court time boasted a positive hitting percentage, a feat the Mountain Lions could not achieve.
The Cowgirls are now 4-8 overall and 0-3 in RMAC play. The will play host to the Adams State Grizzlies on 9/24. There has been a change of location for this game with the Cowgirls taking their game on the road to Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, NM due to renovations in the John A. Wilson Complex.
