Cowgirls Struggle in Opening Tournament

The Cowgirl Volleyball team kicked off their 2010 season at the BritKare West Texas A& M University Lady Buff Classic. The Cowgirls met up with the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps for their first game of the tournament.

The Lady Chaps proved to be a tough competitor as they took three games from the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls fell to the Lady Chaps with scores of 25-19,25-19, and 25-18 in their first game of the day. Leading the Cowgirls' efforts was freshman Darian Mullen. She had 12 kills, 6 digs, and 2 assists. Close behind her was Kelsey Groff with 7 kills.

The Cowgirls then took on the Southeastern Oklahoma Savage Storm for their second game of the tournament. Both teams went into this game looking for their first win of the day.

The Savage Storm came out on top in three games with scores of 25-14,25-16,and 25-16. Mullen was on top for the Cowgirls again with 8 kills and a block. The next Cowgirl was Colleen Chauncey with 5 kills and a pair of blocks.

The Cowgirls continued tournament play on 9/3. Although progress was made, it wasn't enough for the Cowgirls to come home with a victory.

To start off their day, the Cowgirls took on the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma University. The Bronchos came into the game having split the day before 1-1 while the Cowgirls remained at 0-2 going into day two's action.

The Bronchos took the game from the Cowgirls in three quick sets with scores of 25-14,27-25,2 and 25-11. Mullen again led the Cowgirls as she racked up 7 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks during the match up. Close behind her was Sarah Dirmeyer with 5 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks.

As the end of the tournament drew close, the Cowgirls ended out their weekend as they took on the Falcons of the University of Texas- Permian Basin. The Cowgirls took the second set from the Falcons but it wouldn't prove to be enough as the Falcons had already claimed the first and would later claim the third and fourth sets.

The Cowgirls were able to keep the Falcons within their range as the set scores were 25-19,19-25,25-18, and 25-11. Mullen racked up another 8 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks against the Falcons.

The Cowgirls will now return home as they have a big week ahead of them. They will be hosting the I.C. Bhakta Invitational on 9/10 and 9/11 but will first play the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University on 9/9. All games this week will take place in the John A. Wilson. The game time for 9/9 is set for 7pm.
