Cowgirls Pound Grizzlies 4-0

#7 Julissa Rodriguez
The NMHU Cowgirls Soccer team got some revenge on the road as they beat RMAC opponent, Adams State College, on 10/12, by the score of 4-0 in Alamosa, Colo.  The Cowgirls had the 2-0 lead at halftime thanks to goals in the 32nd and 34th minutes.  The Cowgirls kept up the pressure in the second half and scored two more goals, from free kicks, in the 67th and 74th minutes.  When the final whistle had blown, the Cowgirls had amended their earlier home loss to the Grizzlies with the 4-0 victory. With the conference win on the road, the Cowgirls extend their winning streak to five games and improve to 5-4-0 in the RMAC and 7-6-0 in overall play.

The Cowgirls started the game as the more aggressive team, taking three shots in the first five minutes.  The Grizzlies fought back with a six minute flurry of attacks that saw four shots.  The teams continued to go back and forth in the game until the Cowgirls found the first goal of the game.  In the 32nd minute, Cowgirls' striker Janelle McGee passed the ball to striker Marci Johnson, who then laid the ball off to striker Julissa Rodriguez.  Rodriguez took one dribble in the box and beat the Grizzlies' keeper with her shot into the right side of goal.  The goal was Rodriguez's 11th of the season and gave the Cowgirls the 1-0 lead.  The Cowgirls struck again quickly, when striker Janelle McGee scored in the 34th minute.  Midfielder Autumn Woods headed the ball to striker Julissa Rodriguez, and then Rodriguez passed the ball on to McGee inside the penalty box.  McGee took the shot and placed the ball into the right side of the net.  The Cowgirls' took the 2-0 lead on McGee's eighth goal of the season.  When the halftime whistle was blown the Cowgirls were securely in charge of the game, up 2-0.

Adams State began the attack in the second half and both teams traded shots for the first twenty minutes of the half.  In the 67th minute, the Grizzlies drew a yellow card that gave the Cowgirls a free kick.  Julissa Rodriguez set up for the kick outside the penalty box from 25 yards in the middle of the pitch.  Rodriguez buried the ball into the back of the net giving the Cowgirls the 3-0 lead.  The goal was Rodriguez's second of the game and gave her 12 goals for the season.  The Cowgirls found their fourth goal in the 74th minute when a foul on the Grizzlies gave the Cowgirls another free kick.  Striker Marci Johnson stepped up to take the kick from the far left wing and beat the keeper, putting the ball into the goal.  Johnson's fourth goal of the season gave the Cowgirls the 4-0 lead, and pretty much cemented the victory.  When the final whistle was blown, the Cowgirls captured their fifth consecutive win with the 4-0 shutout of Adams State.

The Cowgirls' defense, led by defenders Taylor Gonzales, Jensen Keith, and Bianca Brambila, did a great job in keeping the Adams State team from scoring in the game.  The Grizzlies took 17 shots in the game but the Cowgirls' defense only allowed five of them to find the target.  The Cowgirls' attack was in form during the game, placing nine of 21 shots on goal, and scoring four goals.  Leading the scoring for the Cowgirls was RMAC Offensive Player of the Week Julissa Rodriguez, who scored two goals and had an assist.  Strikers Janelle McGee and Marci Johnson both finished the game with a goal and an assist.  There were five yellow cards issued in what was a physical match, with the Grizzlies seeing two cards and the Cowgirls getting three.  Cowgirls' goal keeper Scottie Prince (4-0-0) was credited with the victory.

The Cowgirls will be in action again on Friday, 10/14, as they host the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, at Perkins Stadium.  The Mountain Lions are one spot below the Cowgirls in the RMAC standings, with a 3-4-0 conference record and 7-4-0 in overall play.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 pm.  If you can't make it to Perkins Stadium to watch the game in person, you can click HERE to watch the game live on the America One Network.
