The Court Cowgirls were dropped in three (25-14, 25-23, 25-22) straight sets against #12 Metro State in Denver, Colo.
Junior Outside Hitter
Ashley Nugent who hit .357 and Sophomore Outside Hitter
Darian Mullen who notched nine kills led the Cowgirls offensively. Defensively, Freshman Libero
Sheila Olaechea held onto her top spot in the RMAC with 13 digs.
Set one started slowly for the Cowgirls who faltered when the Roadrunners had a 12-4 run. The team proceeded to attempt to stay afloat, but Metro ended up taking the first set 25-14.
Three minutes after the first set, Metro jumped to a 2-0 lead, but it was not enough. Highlands answered back quickly and efficiently as they put two on the board themselves. Senior Middle Blocker
Dominique Benton roofed the opposition and helped the 'Girls start runs. Highlands and Metro traded points and had 15 score ties and six lead changes. Highlands pushed their lead in the latter of the set and had two set points at 23-22, but a well-placed kill from Shayne Kovach gave the home team the momentum and the set.
Starting set three, Metro went on a 7-4 run, but Highlands kept their head high and swung to kill. Down 9-13, Mullen started a run for the 'Girls to put them back into the match. The match was close until 15-15 when Metro went on a 5-2 run that the Cowgirls could not recover from. Set three had five tie scores and one lead change.
"The girls are starting to see that they can play with the best teams in our conference, now they have to realize that they can beat these teams,” says Head Coach
Jim Deisler.
