Cowgirls Fight Against Rangers

The Highlands Volleyball team was dropped in three (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) straight sets on 10/14 at Regis University.

The Cowgirls were paced by Sophomore Outside Hitter Darian Mullen who bolstered the statistics with 10 kills and a .240 hitting percentage. Setting the tone for the defense, Freshman Libero Sheila Olaechea dug 16 balls and aced the Rangers three times.

Cumulatively, Highlands had seven blocks and 30 kills. Sophomore Middle Blocker Jazmine Harge had one solo block and three block assists at the net with five kills.

Highlands started slowly in set one, but played feverously. At 10-5, Regis went on a 10-8 run, but the Cowgirls gained momentum and brought them back to 19-20. The teams fought extremely hard, going point for point, but a service error from Senior Defensive Specialist Kristi Salazar gave the Rangers the go-ahead point. Highlands fell by three after their courageous run.

Set two started completely different as the teams traded points evenly until a kill from Senior Middle Blocker Dominique Benton at 6-6 proved to both teams that they came to play. At 14-20, Highlands played efficiently and used errors committed by the home team. The 'Girls went on a killing spree by Mullen and Benton at 17-24, but it was too late as the Rangers took set two 25-20.

After the intermission, Highlands came out swinging and did not accept mediocrity from themselves or their opponent. Junior Outside Hitter Brook Tuttle and Senior Opposite Kelsey Groff pushed their team with kills and kept the game within reach for the visitors. Tied at 17, Regis went on a 6-0 run to give themselves the momentum and the match.

The Cowgirls are back in action on 10/15 at Colorado Christian University.
