Volleyball Drops Two on the Road

The Court Cowgirls concluded their road trip to Silver City with two three-set losses. Highlands fell to Grand Canyon University (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) and RMAC rival Western New Mexico University (25-21, 25-21, 25-19).

Starting the day strong, the Cowgirls pushed points with the 'Lopes of GCU. The teams traded points until 20-all when a service error from the Cowgirls gave the 'Lopes the momentum to finish the set.

The next two sets proved to be the same as the first. Highlands struggled to get into system and create an efficient offense. Sophomore Libero Sheila Olaechea notched 16 digs against the 'Lopers while Senior Middle Blocker Dominique Benton hit an impressive .316 in the first match of the day.

Highlands took on host team Western New Mexico University later that evening. Both teams battled in the sets until the Mustangs gained momentum in the first set with a mixture of Cowgirl errors and Mustang kills.

Each set against WNMU was extremely consistent and well played on both ends.

“We did a good job playing consistent today,” said Head Coach Jim Deisler. “But we were making too many mental errors to give us a chance to win the games. We will get back to work this week to cut back on the errors and give ourselves a chance to come out on top of out of system plays.”

Offensively, the Cowgirls were led by Benton, who hit a .414 clip and blocked five balls.
