Cowboys Fall to #7 CSU-Pueblo 37-0

Cowboys Struggle Offensively in Loss

#37 Jordan Campbell and #58 Devin Howard
The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys fell to the #7 ThunderWolves of CSU-Pueblo on 10/29 by a final score of 37-0. The Cowboys would battle with the nationally ranked powerhouse throughout the first half as the ThunderWolves would hold a slim 7-0 lead going into the halftime break. In the second half the Cowboys would battle defensively, but struggle on offense as they were shut down by the staunch CSU-Pueblo defense.  The ThunderWolves would capitalize on good field position to score 30 points in the second half and run away with their ninth straight win of the season. With the loss, the Cowboys are now 4-5 on the season and 2-5 in RMAC play.

Defense was the highlight of the game for the Cowboys as they battled with the #7 team in the nation throughout the entire game. The Cowboys caused fits for the CSU-Pueblo offense as they held them to one of their lowest offensive outputs of the season. The Cowboys would hold the ThunderWolves to 302 yards of total offense (193 rushing and 109 passing), way below their 370 yards per game average.  Devin Howard, Jordan Campbell and Cordelle Nugent would be the leaders on the Cowboy defense for the game. Howard finished with a season high 20 tackles and added in one sack and one and half tackles for loss. Campbell ended his night with 14 tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass break-up. Nugent rounds out the top three with 12 tackles, two and a half tackles for loss and one sack for a loss of 11 yards.

Offensively, the Cowboys would struggle as a whole. The Pokes finished the game with a season low 121 yards of total offense (87 yards rushing and 34 yards passing).  Clint Barnard led the Cowboys in rushing with 31 yards on four carries. Kevon Williams finished the night with four catches for 22 yards.

The Cowboys will hit the road this week as they travel to Silver City N.M. to face the Mustangs of Western New Mexico University in the “Warrior Helmet” game on 11/5 at 12:00 p.m. The Mustangs have won the past two “Warrior Helmet” games and the Cowboys look to bring the “Warrior Helmet” back to Las Vegas after their in-state showdown on 11/5.
