On 10/6, the Highlands Volleyball Team fell to 8-9 (3-5 RMAC) with a three set (25-19, 25-22, 25-17) loss to Western New Mexico University.
The teams battled the first set but Western ended up taking it after going on a 10-3 run to settle the home team. When the Cowgirls settled into their groove, it was too late, as the Mustangs played consistent volleyball and dug most of the balls that came on their side.
Highlands came out swinging in set two, but the Mustangs held tough. As the teams were tied at six, Highlands used a Mustang error to take an early lead. At 8-8, a kill into the corner from Senior Middle Blocker Dominique Benton spurred a run for her team. Tied at 19, a kill from Angelina Pulu started the Mustang momentum that the Cowgirls could not answer back.
Starting set three, the Cowgirls started strong but were not able to keep their own momentum. The Cowgirls started with a 5-2 run but the Mustangs stayed entrenched in the match. Western finished with a 5-2 run to finalize set three 25-17.
“I thought we could have played a lot better than we did this evening,” said Head Coach Jim Deisler. “We have so much talent and potential that it is disheartening to see us fall to a great team like Western [New Mexico]. We have to regroup and get ready for Adams [State College] on Saturday.”
The Cowgirls travel to Alamosa, Colo. to take on Adams State College at 7 p.m. on 10/8.
