On 10/8, the Cowgirls fell to RMAC opponent Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 16-25, and 24-26).
Set one was controlled heavily by the visitors as kills from Sophomore Outside Hitter Darian Mullen, Senior Opposite Kelsey Groff and Senior Middle Blocker Dominique Benton. The 'Girls started the set with a 7-3 run and held the lead the entire way. At a shaky point, 22-22, Mullen buried a ball to give the Cowgirls the go-ahead point and momentum to cinch the set 25-23.
The teams battled for points in the second set until 13-all, when the Grizzlies started a 7-3 lead which bolstered their momentum. Highlands started a momentum shift but failed to complete it after falling 20-25.
After the intermission, both teams started strong and traded points until 10 apiece. Three aces from the Grizzlies pushed the home team to 15-11. Adams State spread their offense and finished the set winning by nine.
Highlands fought hard in the final set as they faced elimination. At 10-9, Adams hit two balls awry and gave the Cowgirls a reason for playing harder. At 20-16, Highlands gave up four unanswered points but the Cowgirls answered back making the set 22-20. The teams battled but, Highlands fell 24-26.
The Cowgirls are back in action on 10/13 at Metro State at 7 p.m.
