Last Second Heroics Push UCCS Past Cowboys 88-87

Box Score After defeating RMAC rival Colorado Mesa University on a buzzer beating shot on 12/10, the NMHU Cowboys would fall victim to the same fate on 12/16 as the Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs sank a layup as time expired to come away with the 88-87 win on their home court. Both teams shared the lead in the first half with the Cowboys coming out ahead as NMHU made a late surge to take a 51-42 lead into the halftime break. In the second half, the Cowboys led up until the ten minute mark when UCCS's Alex Koehler would sink a three point basket to put the Mountain Lions up 70-68. The Cowboys kept the pressure on the Mountain Lions throughout the final minutes and would tie up the game for the sixth time with 26 seconds remaining after Billy Austin sank a free throw for the Cowboys to knot it up at 86-86. In the final seconds NMHU would take the lead 87-86 after Marcus Williams sank one of his two free throws with seconds remaining in the game leaving UCCS to inbound the ball with seconds remaining on the clock. On the inbounds play UCCS's Alex Koehler would connect with Jordan Carter for the game winning layup as time expired for the 88-87 UCCS win. With the loss the Cowboys drop to 4-4 on the season and 3-2 in RMAC play. The Cowboy will take the court again on 12/17 as they travel to Pueblo, Colo. to take on the Thunderwolves of CSU-Pueblo.

As a team, the Cowboys finished the night shooting 52% from the field and 63% from three point land. The Cowboys would once again struggle from the free throw line as they finished the night shooting 60% from the charity stripe. Defensively, the Cowboys would rack up 12 steals on the night and force 20 UCCS turnovers.

Marcus Williams finished the night leading all scorers with a season high 31 points. Williams also added three rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and one steal in his 35 minutes of play against UCCS.

Billy Austin and Momcilo Latinovic each finished the night with 18 points for the Cowboys. Austin also had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals on the night. Latinovic added four rebounds and one steal to his totals for the night.
