The NMHU soccer team lost a close home game to the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M University, by the score of 1-0, on Sunday, 9/11. The Cowgirls' defense had another good game but the team struggled in possession, and could never really threaten the Lady Buffs' goal keeper. The Lady Buffs took advantage of a free kick to score the winning goal in the 80th minute of regular time, sealing their victory. With the loss the Cowgirls fall to a 1-2 non-conference record this season. However, both their losses came at the hands of a pair of really good women's soccer teams in the NCAA DII third ranked College of Saint Rose and a very strong West Texas A&M team from the Lone Star Conference.
The Lady Buffs started the game strongly, attacking the Cowgirls' goal early with great movement of the ball. The Lady Buffs had good control of the ball and attempted 17 shots in the game, with 10 of those shots on goal. The Cowgirls defense did a very good job under pressure to keep West Texas A&M off the scoreboard. Cowgirl sweeper
Jensen Keith once again anchored the defense and kept things tight at the back. The Cowgirls' keeper
Shannon Delarosbil did a good job in goal making nine saves in the game. In the 80th minute a NMHU foul gave the Lady Buffs a free kick from right of center, 50 yards from the goal. Lady Buff defender Berklee Watson confidently stepped up and booted a spectacular ball across goal and into the upper left corner of the goal. It was a perfect shot from an amazing distance and there was nothing the Delarosbil could do as the ball went straight in under the cross bar in the top left corner. It was Watson's second goal of the season for the Lady Buffs and would prove to be the game winner as the only goal scored in the match.
The Cowgirls could never really get their attacks started until late in the match. Cowgirl strikers
Julissa Rodriguez and
Marci Johnson did provide some threat to the Lady Buffs keeper but it was not to be. Rodriguez took four shots in the game with three on goal, while Johnson took two shots on goal with both on target. The Cowgirls combined for 13 shots with eight shots on goal.
The Cowgirls' next match will be on Friday, 9/16, as they travel to Lakewood, Colo. to take on the RMAC opponent Colorado Christian University in the first conference game of the season. The Cougars are 1-2 in non-conference play and the two teams are tied in the conference standings. If you can't make the trip up to Colorado to watch the Cowgirls in action, you can click
