The New Mexico Highlands University volleyball team was dropped in the opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match of the 2011 season. The Lopers of the University of Nebraska Kearney handed the Cowgirls a three set loss (25-8, 25-17, 25-9).
The first set was started with an 8-2 Kearney run, but a kill from
Darian Mullen did not stop the Loper offense. Highlands battled late in the set, but it was too late for the home team.
In set two, Highlands carried their momentum from the first set and traded points until 14-14 when the visitors proceeded to gain a drive to win the set and match.
Set three was run by the Lopers early, but Highlands ran an effective offense out of the middle when senior Middle Hitter
Dominique Benton notched kills. Kearney went on to drop the Cowgirls 25-9.
The Cowgirls return Friday night at 7:00 P.M. in an RMAC matchup against Chadron State College.
