Court Cowgirls Start Strong

The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team handed the University of the Southwest and Oklahoma Panhandle State University a pair of losses at the OPSU Spiketacular Friday night. In the opening match, the Cowgirls corralled the Mustangs in three straight sets (25-16, 25-11, 25-21) with Dominique Benton pacing the team with 10 kills and one solo block.

As the Cowgirls took on host OPSU, Darian Mullen led Highlands with 12 kills and notched six digs. In the third set of the evening match, the Aggies started a run at 13-13, but Coach Deisler's defense boasted momentum-killing digs to stop the home offense. A set of four digs from Sheila Olaechea boosted the Cowgirls to 22-20 which ended up sealing their lead for good. The Cowgirls finished the match winning in dramatic style, 25-22, 25-21, 26-24.

“We played extremely well tonight and I'm very happy with the results,” said coach Jim Deisler. “Our offense was clicking, defense was passing well and we were in system. It was a great beginning to our season.”

The Cowgirls are back on the court at 11 A.M. Saturday morning against St. Gregory's University
