The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys survived what became a dog fight with the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University on 9/24 by a final score of 41-38. The Mavericks would jump out to an early lead 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Cowboys then answered back as they scored 21 points to CMU's 14 to go into halftime with a slight lead 21-17. The Cowboys would then be the lone team to score in the third quarter as they scored on a three yard run by
Harold Mobley to go up 34-24. CMU then answered back by scoring two straight touchdowns following the Cowboys score to take the lead 38-34. For the second straight week, the Cowboys would find themselves faced with another last minute drive with the game on the line. Cowboy quarterback,
Nick Ponce, was a true field general as he marched the Cowboys 69 yards down the field in 12 plays to once again secure the win for the Cowboys. Ponce would connect with Cowboy wide receiver
Kevon Williams for the game winning score to put the Cowboys in the lead for good 41-38. The Cowboys are now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in RMAC play.
"We didn't play our best game today, but a win is a win. I'm very proud of the way our guys responded today to come back and win in the face of adversity. Now it's time to go back to work next week and prepare for Western State," commented NMHU Head Coach
Eric Young following his Cowboys thrilling 41-38 come from behind victory over the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University.
Offensively, the Cowboys finished the day with 515 yards, 124 yards on the ground and 391 in the air. With their 515 yards on the day, the Cowboys make three games in a row that they rack up 500+ yards of offense.
Jequerie Proctor led the Cowboys in rushing with 59 yards on the day.
Nick Ponce finished the day 34 of 52 for 390 yards and three touchdowns on the day.
Kevon Williams would have a breakout day as he finished with 11 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Cowboys would wreak havoc in the CMU backfield all day as they racked up nine sacks and 19 tackles for loss on the day. The Cowboys held CMU to 490 total yards offensively (116 rushing and 374 passing).
Jordan Campbell led the way for the Cowboys as he finished with a season high 17 tackles. Campbell would also add three tackles for loss and one sack to his accomplishments for the day.
Cordelle Nugent had a great day himself as he finished the day with 12 tackles (four tackles for loss), one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one interception with a 15 yard interception return. Nugent's interception would be his second of the season.
DiAmaal Holmes rounds out the top performers for the Cowboys as he finished with eight tackles.
With the 41-38 thrilling victory over Colorado Mesa University, the Cowboys remain undefeated at 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in RMAC play. The Cowboys will take the show on the road on 10/1 as they travel to Gunnison, Colo. to take on the Mountaineers of Western State College.
