Cowboys Crush Mountain Lions 88-71

Box Score The NMHU Cowboys completed their weekend RMAC sweep on 1/28 with a convincing 88-71 win over the Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in front of a great home crowd. The Cowboys dominated the game from the get-go as they held UCCS to just nine points through the 10 minute mark of the first half. The Cowboys would lead by as much as 18 points in the first half of play as they went into the halftime break leading 39-32 over the Mountain Lions. In the second half it would be more of the same as the Pokes continued to pour on the pressure leading by as much as 27 points in the second half.  Dominic Baca would put the final nail in the coffin for the Cowboys draining a three point bucket in the final minute of play off a Micah Shepard pass to put the Cowboys up 88-71 as the Pokes cruised to their tenth win of the season. With the win the Cowboys are now 10-9 overall and 8-7 in RMAC play. The Cowboys currently sit at sixth place overall in the latest RMAC standings as they continue their quest for their fourth straight trip to the RMAC Shootout while under Head Coach Joe Harge.

As a team the Cowboys finished the night shooting 44% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc. Five Cowboys would finish the night scoring in double figures. The Pokes would pull down 47 rebounds as a team on the night. Defensively, the Cowboys forced 14 UCCS turnovers, blocked six shots and stole the ball five times from the Mountain Lions.

Billy Austin led the way for the Cowboys posting his second double-double of the season pulling down a team high 10 defensive rebounds and scoring 12 points. Austin added in four assists to his night's totals in his 26 minutes of play.

Aaryon Williams finished the night leading the Cowboys in scoring with 14 points. Williams would add in two rebounds and two blocked shots to his impressive performance.

Mike Moody rounds out the top three performers for the Pokes. Moody would finish the night with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists. Other Cowboys in double figures were: Aaron Shepard (12), Ryan Gonzales (11) and Momcilo Latinovic (11).

The Cowboys will hit the road to face their next opponent as they travel to Alamosa, Colo. to take on the Grizzlies of Adams State College (14-4; 10-4 RMAC). The Grizzlies are currently in third place in the latest RMAC standing. The last time the Cowboys and the Grizzlies met was on 1/7/12 in Las Vegas, N.M., with the Cowboys defeating the Grizzlies 90-84.
