Cowboys Outlast Skyhawks 96-94

Box Score The NMHU Cowboys would outlast the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on 1/6 to claim their seventh win of the season by a final score of 96-94. The Cowboys jumped out early on the Skyhawks as they would lead by as much as 14 points in the first half. The Cowboys would go into the halftime break with a 48-42 lead over Fort Lewis.  The second half would be more of the same as the Cowboys would lead most of the way. In the final minutes of play the Skyhawks would stage a comeback with 22 second left to play as Mathew Mazerei would take the ball to the hole for FLC to put the Skyhawks up 95-94. Billy Austin would answer back by hitting a jumper with 12 seconds on the clock to put the home team back in the lead 95-94. On the next possession Billy Austin would continue his late heroics by stealing the ball from a FLC player. Austin would be fouled on the play and sink one of two free throws to the put the Cowboys up 96-94 with three seconds remaining. On the next possession the Cowboy defense would stand strong and knock the ball away from the Skyhawks to secure their seventh win of the season. With the win, the Cowboys are now 7-6 on the season and 5-4 in RMAC play.

The Cowboys would have a balanced attack on the night offensively as six Cowboys finished the night in double figures. As a team the Cowboys finished shooting 59% from the field and 46% from beyond the three point line. Defensively the Cowboys forced 13 Skyhawk turnovers and pulled down 27 rebounds on the night.

Billy Austin led the way for the Cowboys shooting an impressive 7-10 from the field and 3-5 from the three point line. Austin finished with 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals for the game.

Momcilo Latinovic finished the night 7-12 from the field and 3-6 from three point land. Latinovic finished with 18 points, three rebounds and one steal.

Ryan Gonzales was the sharp shooter for the evening as he finished 4-7 from beyond the three point line. Gonzales finished with 14 points, one rebound and two assists for the night.

Other Cowboys finishing the night in double figures were; Lionel Coleman (12), Mike Moody (11) and Aaryon Williams (10).

The Cowboys will look to complete their weekend sweep on 1/7 as they take the floor against the Grizzlies of Adams State College at 8:00 p.m. in the John A. Wilson Complex.
