Box Score Grand Junction, Colo. – The NMHU Cowboy Basketball team couldn't pull-out a win against the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa University, on 12/8. The Cowboys trailed for much of the game, but they were able to hold a lead in the second half. The Mavericks rallied and found a way to win 81-75, in front of their home crowd. With the loss the Cowboys, led by Head Coach Joe Harge, are now 1-3 in the RMAC and 3-4 in overall play.
The Cowboys held the initial lead for the first five minutes of the game, before CMU turned the tide and went ahead. The Mavericks cruised through the first half of play, leading by as many as 12 points.
The Cowboys were able to cut their deficit to seven points before the buzzer ended the first half and the Mavericks went into the locker-room up 40-33.
The Cowboys scored first at the start of the second half, but the Mavericks quickly regained control and re-established their double-digit lead just two and a half minutes in. The Cowboys regained their composure and battled to tie the game up 51-51 with 13:49 remaining in the game.
The Cowboys were able to pull ahead and enjoyed a six point lead with 9:02 left to play. The Mavericks came back and tied the game up with just three minutes to go.
The teams went back and forth until CMU's Colton Burgon completed the three-point play from the free throw line with 1:17 remaining, giving the Mavericks a one-point lead. CMU was able to hold off the Cowboys' attempts to regain the lead in the final minute, and when the buzzer sounded to end the game the Mavericks were victorious 81-75.
The Cowboys allowed the Mavericks to score 18 points off of 16 turnovers in the game. They also struggled with fouls, allowing CMU players to convert 21-30 from the free-throw line. NMHU was able to convert 16-18 free throws for a 88.9 percentage from the charity stripe.
Guard
Lavell McDade led the Cowboys' assault with 14 points against the Mavericks. McDade made a 50% of his shots from the field, including a perfect 3-3 from three-point land. He also added five rebounds and four assists in his 25 minutes on the court.
Lionel Coleman and
Mannie Cass each contributed 12 points and one rebound to the effort. Both players were perfect from the free-throw line, with Coleman shooting 4-4 and Cass 6-6.
Roland Fitch rounds out the Cowboys' top performers with 10 points and four rebounds.
The Cowboys will continue conference action again on 12/14, when they host the Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs at the John A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, N.M.
