Box Score Las Vegas, N.M. - Tuesday night, 9/18, was the
New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls home opener against the Eastern New Mexico Zias.
Darian Mullen had another dominate performance on the offensive side with a .333 hitting percentage and 18 kills.
First year Head Coach
Bryan Crawford made a tremendous impression on the home crowd at the John A. Wilson Complex. He said, “We were led by
Darian Mullen on the offensive side and continued to establish ourselves on the defensive side.”
The Cowgirls came into tonight's game after beating the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis last Saturday, 9/15, and looked to continue their quest for victory. Tonight was no different, as they beat the Zias in four sets (25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 25-14).
The Cowgirls played with tremendous intensity and composure, never letting ENMU get a rhythm.
The Cowgirls established themselves early and often with helping hands from NMHU's middle blockers,
Sarah Dirmeyer and
Mariah White.
The Zias (4-6) put forth a courageous effort in the third set that prevented the Cowgirls from sweeping them in three sets. NMHU made their mark on the defensive side, holding the Zias to a .156 hitting percentage in the four-set match.
Leading the Cowgirls in digs was
Katie Saavedra (21).
Marina Samoa also added 14 digs of her own.
The NMHU Cowgirls will have another home stand Friday, 9/21, against Western State Colorado University and finish up the weekend with Adams State on Saturday, 9/22, both RMAC Conference match-ups.
