Mustangs Buck-Off Cowgirls

Box Score The New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls Volleyball Team fell to 2-4 in conference and 6-9 overall,in their loss to in-state rival Western New Mexico Mustangs (3-2 in conference and 6-9 overall), on Friday, 9/28, in Silver City, N.M. They losted the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match-up, losing in three sets (25-22, 25-22, and 25-21).

The teams battled in the first set but Western ended up taking it after jumping out to 5-0 lead. When the Cowgirls settled into their groove, it was too late, as the Mustangs played consistent volleyball and dug most of the balls that came on their side. The Cowgirls battled back a number a times and eventually slimmed the lead down to, 23-21. The Cowgirls gave up a service error and kill to end the first set with a loss, 25-22.

Highlands came out swinging in set two, but the Mustangs showed toughness on Drags Court. The Cowgirls would race out to an early 14-9 lead. Following a WNMU timeout, the Mustangs scuffled back to tie the set at 19 apiece. The Cowgirls would eventually give up the set to the Mustangs, by the score of 25-22.

In set three, the Cowgirls started strong but were not able to keep their own momentum. Fighting back from a 17-10 deficit, NMHU regrouped to make it a intriguing match, but landed up losing in three sets.

The Cowgirls were led by senior Middle Blocker Sarah Dirmeyer who had five kills and a .364 attack percentage. Junior Outside Hitter Darian Mullen led the way for the Cowgirls with ten kills.

The Cowgirls hit the road, on 10/5, to take on the Rangers of Regis University in Denver, Colo.   The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
