Box Score 2 Weatherford, Okla. - In great spirits, the Cowgirls kicked off the 2013 Softball season against Southwestern Oklahoma State University, on Feb. 2. It was a great day for a softball doubleheader because of the good weather. Cowgirl Head Coach Shellie Broyles was trying to lead her team to an early season victory, but the Bulldogs had different plans. The Cowgirls fell behind in both games and allowed the Bulldogs to walk away with their first two wins of the season.
The first game began very hopeful as the two teams raced to gain their first run and lead of the season. The Bulldogs broke the ice as they took advantage of a Cowgirl error to score a run. By the fourth inning the Cowgirls were in a hole, trailing 4-0. The Cowgirls rallied in the top of the fifth inning, capitalizing on a couple of Bulldog errors.
Brittany Potter, the 2013 All-RMAC Preseason First Team short stop, sparked the two runs for the Cowgirls in the fifth inning with a hit.
Brittany Potter is responsible for bringing two Cowgirls home. She hit to the short stop who committed a fielding error. The rally became interesting as Potter made the most of her base hit by advancing to third base after two wild pitches by the Bulldogs. Unluckily, the Cowgirls ended the top of the fifth inning by grounding out.
The Cowgirls attempted to rally once again, but found no luck scoring runs in the final innings. The Cowgirls lost their first game 4-2.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cowgirls ran into some trouble early. They allowed four runs in the first inning. Because the Cowgirls' pitching allowed two walks, the Bulldogs were able to score two runs, commanding the early lead. The good hitting continued for the Bulldogs as they captured a 5-0 lead by the end of the first inning.
Brittany Potter stepped up to another potentially impossible task as she tried to get the Cowgirls out of the mess they had created earlier. The Cowgirl brought in a run in the third inning closing the scoring gap to four. Despite the run, the Cowgirls failed to rally for another score. At the end of the third inning the score was 5-1 in the favor of the Bulldogs.
Desperately, the Cowgirls attempted to score runs, but only found minor success. At the end of the game, the dearth of Cowgirl runs allowed the Bulldogs to win their second straight against the Cowgirls. The final score was 7-2.
The Cowgirls will continue non-conference action on Feb. 3 against the Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla. The Bulldogs will host the Cowgirls for their third and fourth game this season. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12:00 p.m., with the second game of the day scheduled for 2:00pm.
