Box Score Silver City, N.M. – The NMHU Men's Basketball team continued to stay in the hunt for the RMAC post-season tournament with a win over the Western New Mexico University Mustangs. On Mar. 2 the Cowboys defeated the Mustangs 70-67. Led by Head Coach Joe Harge, the Cowboys are now 11-11 in conference play and 13-13 overall.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead and were able to extend it to 10 points (17-7) by the 12:40 mark of the first half. Led by
Lavell McDade and
Mannie Cass, the Cowboys kept control of the game until the Mustangs went on a 10-2 run with 7:10 to play in the first half, allowing WNMU to close the gap, 22-20.
Cass and McDade continued to score for the Cowboys. They scored 14 points apiece in the first half, leading the Cowboys with 28 of their 37 points.
At the end of the first half the Cowboys were up 37-28.
Mannie Cass started the second half where he left off in the first half. He scored a 3-pointer and extended the Cowboy's largest lead to 12 points at the 19:31 mark of the second half.
With 9:12 left to play, the Mustangs had gained the lead (54-50).The lead would be exchanged over the next couple of minutes until the Cowboys were able to go ahead 60-58 with 5:48 to play.
The Cowboys pushed the lead to six points with seven seconds left in the game, with a pair of free throws by McDade.
The Cowboys outscored the Mustangs 70-67 in their win.
Lavell McDade finished the game with 19 points, shooting 4-8 beyond the arc, and getting four steals.
Mannie Cass also finished the game with 19 points. He shot perfect form the foul line, going 8-8.
The NMHU Men's Basketball team finished the 2012-13 regular season with an 11-11 conference record and a 13-13 overall record. With the win over WNMU, the Cowboys have ensured a place in the RMAC post-season tournament.
