Box Score 2 Las Vegas, N.M. – The Cowgirl Volleyball Team started their 2013 season opener with a victory in a non-conference match against Southern Nazarene University. The Cowgirls beat the Storm in five sets (25-27, 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 15-12) The Cowgirls' hitting average for the match was .150 with six team blocks. In the Second match of the 2013 Hampton Inn Invitational Tournament the Cowgirls were defeated by the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University in four sets (18-25, 19-25, 25-22, 28-30). The Cowgirls' hitting average for the match was .123 and they had 10 team blocks.
NMHU 3 – Southern Nazarene 2
The Cowgirls were led by senior
Darian Mullen. She had 17 kills, one assist, and one dig. She hit a very good .344 average in the opening match. Freshman
Bailey Weidner helped with the offensive attack, hitting an impressive .417 with six kills and two digs.
The Cowgirls started the set with a 3-1 lead against the Storm of Southern Nazarene University. Continuing the early momentum, the Cowgirls took advantage of all the opportunities starting set one with an 11-7 lead.
The Storm cut the momentum in the set by going on an eight point run. They cut the lead by two points 16-14. The Storm went on a 7-4 run and took the lead 21-20. The Cowgirls tied the game at 25-25. However, they lost in the last two points.
The second set the Cowgirls took an early lead, 13-7. They never game up the lead or any momentum changes to the Storm. They finished the set strong with the win. The Cowgirls hitting was .200.
The third set the Cowgirls were tied up with the Storm at 8-8. From this point on, the Cowgirls took the lead and never looked back. The Cowgirls dominated the rest of the game and earned a victory in the set, 25-15. The Cowgirls hit a team average of .200 in the third set.
In the fourth set, both the Cowgirls and the Storm were in a much closer set and it was tied 15-15. The Storm took the control and took the lead. The storm finished this set with a 25-19 win. The Cowgirls hitting average went down from previous set to .033.
The Cowgirls started the fifth set tied up with the storm 3-3. From this point on, the Cowgirls took control and the lead. They won a close fifth set against the Storm, 15-12. The Cowgirls hitting average was .150.
The Cowgirls started their season with a three-set-to-two victory against Southern Nazarene University.
Southwestern Oklahoma State 3 – NMHU 1
During the first set, the Cowgirls were tied up with the Bulldogs at 2-2. The Bulldogs took control and the lead with their offensive attack and never game up their lead in the first set, winning by the final score of 25-18.
The Cowgirls were tied in the second set against the Bulldogs at 8-8. The Bulldogs took advantage of 10 errors and it led to another set win, 25-19.
The Cowgirls were tied in the third set at 9-9. It was a very intense set. The Cowgirls were able to take control and the lead. With the control and the momentum the Cowgirls never looked back. They finished strong with a victory in the third set, 25-22.
In the fourth set the Cowgirls were tied once again with the Bulldogs at mid set, 14-14. From this point on the Cowgirls took the lead 22-18. Once again the game was at a tie in a very critical moment of the deciding fourth set at 24-24. The Bulldogs took the lead the next point at 25-24. The next play there was a blocking error from SWOSU's Alison Cole. The match set point was extremely intense for both the Cowgirls and Bulldogs who both battled bravely. The Bulldogs took the final set 30-28.
The Cowgirls ended the first day of the 2013 Hampton Inn Invitational Tournament with a split (1-1). The Cowgirls will play two games tomorrow, Sept. 7. The first game is at 9:00 a.m. versus Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The second game is at 1:00 p.m. versus McMurry University.
