Cowboy Wrestlers Prepare to Soar Against the Eagles

Cody Marquez is 2-0 in dual season for the Cowboys.
LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys wrestling team will start their duals matches in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this week on the road. Their first dual is on Thurs (Jan. 16) against the Eagles of Chadron State (3-3) at 7pm in Chadron, Neb. The second dual is against the Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines (0-0) on Friday, (Jan 17) at 7pm in Golden, Colo.

"The level of intensity needs to be brought up a notch or two in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals, starting against Chadron St," coach Doug Moses noted.

The Cowboys will be counting on junior Easton Hargrave, senior Igor Gomzin and senior Justin Rockhill for their veteran leadership from the upper weights. Sophomore Erick Rangel and Redshirt sophomore Juan Alvarado look to continue leading the Cowboy charge.

Rangel (17-3) and Alvarado (16-3) are leading the Cowboys in victories.

Junior Tre Humphrey has won his last two duals by falls. Junior Mariano Montoya first two victories have come by, one by fall and one by decision. In his last two dual matches, Gomzin has earned a fall and one major. Rockhill's last two dual matches have been by tech fall and decision. Sophomore Cody Marquez's dual victories have come by fall and by forfeit.


A quick look into the Eagles of Chadron State.

The Eagles are led by two nationally ranked wrestlers, Dustin Stodola at 133 is ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II Individual Rankings (as of Jan. 3). Jordan DeBus at 184 is ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II Individual Rankings. Chadron State won its last dual by the final score 27-15 in a non-conference dual victory against Morningside College.
