NMHU Announces Creation of Dennis Lucero Wrestling Endowed Scholarship Fund

Las Vegas, New Mexico - New Mexico Highlands University Athletics and the New Mexico Highlands Foundation are proud to announce the creation of the Dennis Lucero Wrestling Endowed Scholarship Fund, a permanent scholarship established to support future generations of Cowboy wrestlers.

A 1985 graduate of New Mexico Highlands University and a member of the 2005 NMHU H-Club Hall of Fame class, Dennis Lucero remains one of the most accomplished wrestlers in program history. During his collegiate career, Lucero captured Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships in both 1984 and 1985 and finished as the NAIA National Runner-Up at 142 pounds in 1985.

The establishment of the endowed scholarship reflects Lucero's lifelong commitment to New Mexico Highlands University and Cowboy Wrestling.

"It's difficult to adequately express what his generosity, and the creation of this endowment means for our program. From his time spent here as a student-athlete and what he accomplished in that realm, to all he continues to do for Highlands, and the city of Las Vegas - Dennis is a true Cowboy," said NMHU Head Coach Chris Freije.  "This is endowment is something that will truly impact our student-athletes in a major way for generations to come. We are so blessed to have the Lucero family, and all of our are alumni so passionately behind us. What we have going at New Mexico Highlands is truly special, and rare in Division II Wrestling. It takes a village to attain great things, and we've got a strong group behind us."

Lucero has remained an ardent supporter of the wrestling program long after his competitive career concluded. His generosity has directly impacted student-athletes, including a previous donation of new wrestling mats that continue to benefit the program today.

Most recently, Lucero hosted New Mexico Highlands' duel against Colorado Mesa at Buffalo Hall in Las Vegas. The event drew a strong crowd and showcased the deep connection between Cowboy Wrestling and the local community.

"Few individuals have had the lasting impact on Cowboy Wrestling that Dennis Lucero has had as both a student-athlete and alumnus. His accomplishments on the mat helped build the tradition of our program, and his generosity continues to strengthen it today," said Athletic Director Scott Noble. "This endowed scholarship creates a legacy that will support future Cowboys for years to come."

The Dennis Lucero Wrestling Endowed Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance to future Cowboy wrestlers, helping ensure that student-athletes have the opportunity to pursue both academic and athletic excellence at New Mexico Highlands University.
