Grapplers Blast Colorado Mines for First Conference Win of Season

Junior Tre Humphrey has three pins in four dual bouts.
GOLDEN, Colo. – A day after losing its first dual of the year, New Mexico Highlands University wrestling (3-1, 1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) rebounded with a dominating 34-12 win over Colorado School of Mines (0-1, 0-1 RMAC).

"It feels good to get the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season," head coach Doug Moses said.

After forfeiting at 149 to spot Colorado Mines a 6-0 lead, the Cowboys won the next four matches and never looked back in a 22-point win. Redshirt sophomore Juan Alvarado at 157 cut the deficit in half with a 5-1 decision. Alvarado got the first period takedown but allowed an escape to hold a 2-1 lead after one. Alvarado rode out the Orediggers' Ashton Krajnovich the entire second, before a takedown and the riding point sealed the 4-point win.

Redshirt freshman Manuel Sedillo (6-7) put Highlands in the lead with a dominating 9-0 win at 165. Sedillo came out and threw a five-point move on Colorado Mines' Robert Davis with a takedown and three back points. An escape in the second, a takedown in the third and the riding point closed out the scoring.

With a slim 7-6 lead, junior Easton Hargrave (9-8) at 174 recorded the first of three falls on the night. Hargrave got the quick takedown and quickly tilted his opponent for the pin in 1:36.

Senior Igor Gomzin (6-7) won by forfeit at 184 as the Cowboys took a 19-6 lead.

After Colorado Mines took the 197 bout by a 9-5 decision, sophomore Cody Marquez (9-6) barely took the mat at 285 as he pinned his opponent in only 41 seconds. Highlands led 25-9 and all but sealed the win with three matches left in the dual.

Sophomore Erick Rangel (18-3) took a tough 6-5 loss at 125 before Highlands claimed the final two matches. Junior Tre Humphrey (3-5), who has a pair of falls in three dual matches, claimed another pin at 133. Leading 5-4 after the first period, Humphrey started down, reversed his opponent and got three back points before finishing the pin in 4:33.

Highlands closed out the match with a 5-2 decision at 141 by sophomore Orlando Guerra (7-8). Guerra reversed his opponent once in both the first and third periods and claimed the 3-point win with riding time.
