Wrestling Falls at Colorado Mesa, 29-18

Sophomore Cody Marquez nearly completed the upset of Colorado Mesa when he almost pinned his opponent.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Cowboys claimed a trio of wins by forfeit, but the Mavericks took the other seven matches as New Mexico Highlands University (3-3, 1-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell to #18 Colorado Mesa (9-2, 3-0 RMAC) 29-18.
 
With the match coming down to the last event, Highlands nearly pulled off the upset. Sophomore Cody Marquez nearly pinned his opponent, but Francisco Retana tallied the fall in 5:20.
 
Sophomore Erick Rangel at 125, senior Igor Gomzin at 184 and junior Justin Rockhill at 197 won by forfeit for the Cowboys' 18 points in the dual. James Martinez won by forfeit at 149.
 
To finish off the scoring, the home team claimed a trio of decisions and two majors.
 
The Cowboys wrestlers compete in its first true home dual Wednesday (Jan. 29) when they host Adams State. Match time is set for 7 p.m.

At 133, Jonathon Stelling (Colorado Mesa University) won by decision over Tre Humphrey (NMHU) 15-11 NMHU 6-3
At 141, Daniel Salazar (Colorado Mesa University) won by decision over Orlando Guerra (NMHU) 7-1. Tied 6-6
At 149, James Martinez (Colorado Mesa University) won by forfeit. CMU 12-6
157, Trevor Donarski (Colorado Mesa University) won by major decision over Jesse Martinez (NMHU) 14-5. CMU 16-6
At 165, Jessie Hoffschneider (Colorado Mesa University) won by major decision over Juan Alvarado (NMHU), 10-1. CMU 20-6
At 174, Chester Granard (Colorado Mesa University) won by decision over Easton Hargrave (NMHU) 7-0. CMU 23-6
At 184, Igor Gomzin (NMHU) won by Forfeit. CMU 23-12
At 197, Justin Rockhill (NMHU) won by forfeit. CMU 23-18
At 285,  Francisco Retana (Colorado Mesa University) won by pin over Cody Marquez (NMHU) in 5:20. CMU won 29-18.
