The Cowgirls outshout the Mountaineers by one, 12-11. However, that one shot proved to what was needed as the one shot off of one lone corner kick in the first overtime gave the home team its first loss of the season as New Mexico Highlands (5-3-2, 2-2-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) downs Western State (5-1-4, 2-1-3) Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) in Gunnison, Colorado.

After both teams managed 11 shots for the game, Highlands made the most of its 12th. With no action for the first three minutes of ovetime, the Cowgirls were awarded a corner kick. Junior Jasmine Waugaman served the ball to freshman Hannah Dahlquist, who headed the ball into the net for her second goal of the 2014 campaign. It was also her first game-winning goal of the season.

Freshman goalie Sarah Beecher recorded her seventh shutout – sixth solo – of the season, improving to 5-3-2 on the year. Beecher grabbed six saves in the win for the Cowgirls.

Meghan Jedrzejewski took the loss for Western State to fall to 5-1-4 on the year in goal. It was only the fourth goal all season she has allowed and the second in the last nine games.

The Cowgirls take their penultimate road trip of the regular season next weekend when they travel to Adams State and Fort Lewis. First up is the Grizzlies, who Highlands squares off with Friday (Oct. 10) at 4 p.m. in Alamosa, Colorado.
