FULL MEN"S CROSS COUNTRY RELEASE
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico Highlands men's cross country junior
Sam Roybal was named Academic All-Conference, annouced the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference offices on Thursday (Dec. 18).
"Sam has become a real leader in our program," head coach
Bob DeVries said. "It takes commitment to exceed expectations to train as long and hard as our teams do and never get a B in the classroom."
Receiving Honorable Mention honors on the men's side is senior
Sean Sanchez and
Andrew Enscanuela with junior
Stephen Carbajal. For the Cowgirls women's cross country team, sophomores
Larissa Garcia and
Tayler Hendren were named Honorable Mention.
Roybal, who holds a 4.0 in business administration, was a solid fifth runner for the Cowboys all season. He helped Highlands to team titles in both the George Kyte Classic on Sept. 6 in Flagstaff, Arizona, and at the HU Cross Country Jam on Sept. 27. At the Fort Hays State Tiger Open on Oct. 18, he turned in a season-best in the 8k of 27:00.5.
Sanchez holds a 3.45 GPA in health while Escanuela holds a 3.63 GPA in elementary education. The top Highlands runner for the Cowboys for much of the 2014 season, Escanuela finished second in 25:51.2 to help lead Highlands to the HU Cross Country Jam title.
Garcia (3.73 in health) and Hendren (3.80 GPA in exercise science) both hail from Belen, New Mexico.
