Early Run Dooms Cowboys in Loss at Adams State

Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. – Trailing 9-8, the Cowboys let up an 11-3 run and the Grizzlies never looked back as the New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team (10-10, 7-9 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell to Adams State (13-6 overall, 9-6 RMAC) 99-84 Friday Night (Feb. 7) in Alamosa, Colo.
 
Trailing 47-32, seniors Lavell McDade and Stargell Love both hit a pair from the line to bring the Cowboys within 11 just a minute before halftime. McDade than grabbed a steal and threated to bring the deficit to single digits, but Highlands turned it over and committed a foul. Adams State hit a pair from the line to lead by 13 at halftime.
 
A three by senior Mannie Cass brought Highlands within 57-47 in the second half, but the Cowboys could not get it to single-digits as the Grizzlies quickly made a lay-up.
 
Cass and Adams State's Mike Hemsley both led their respective teams with 29 points. Love added 14 while McDade chipped in 10 for the Cowboys. Highlands was able to make 40.3 percent (25-62) from the field, but the Cowboys could only hit 16.7 percent (4-24) from beyond the arc.
 
Adams State countered by hitting 32-62 (51.6 percent) from the field.
 
With the Grizzlies trailing 4-3 after a junior Jeverik Nelson dunk, Rodney Nelson hit a triple and Helmsley added his own dunk as the home team led for the rest of the game.
 
The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team returns to action tomorrow night when it takes on Fort Lewis.
