ADA and DURANT, Okla. – The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team (2-2) looks to build upon its pair of wins last weekend at West Texas A&M this weekend when it plays in the South Central tournament in Oklahoma. The Cowgirls begin action tonight (Sept. 11) at East Central at 6 p.m.
 
On Friday (Sept. 12), at East Central, the Cowgirls will take on Missouri Southern at 11 a.m., and Texas A&M International at 4 p.m. Highlands will then head to Durant, Oklahoma, on Saturday (Sept. 13) to battle Southern Nazarene at 7 a.m. and Central Oklahoma (1 p.m).
 
Senior Alicia Moreno leads the team with 38 kills (2.92 kills per set) and a .319 hitting percentage. She had a double-double, the first of Highlands' season, with 17 kills and 13 digs in a four-set win over rival Eastern New Mexico.
 
Sophomore Andrea Nunez had 33 kills for the season (2.36 kills per set). Senior Jessica Piper leads the team with 4.08 digs per set.

Scouting East Central
 
The Lady Tigers are still searching for their first win of the season (0-5) when Highlands invades their gym Thursday night (Sept. 11). While most matches have been in straight sets, East Central did lose a heartbreaker in five sets to Southern Nazarene for its home opener Tuesday (Sept. 11). The Lady Tigers captured the first two sets of the match.
 
Like Highlands, East Central will come at teams with a solid attack. Sarah Simpson leads the Lady Tigers with 2.56 kills per set (46 kills in 18 sets) while Madyson Gills checks in with 2.00 kills per set (26 kills in 13 sets).
 
East Central is hitting .071 for the season and averages just a bit more than nine kills per set.
 
 
Scouting Missouri Southern


 
The Lions are 1-3 on the season after participating in the Anglo State Tournament over the weekend.  MSSU trails its opponents in most statistical categories, but is close.  However, they do have a 2.3 blocks per set to 2.1 advantage.

Krishna Merriman and Callie Whetstone lead the Lions on offense.  Merriman has a team-high 46 kills and adds 31 digs and 12 blocks assists.  Whetstone has a .264 (31 kills on 72 attempts with 12 errors) hitting percentage, five service aces and 29 blocks.
 
 
Scouting Texas A&M International
 
The Dustdevils are 0-3 on the season, with all three matches having been Heartland Conference affairs.  Texas A&M International has lost their last two matches in straight sets.
 
Tazmin Apple is the most consistent hitter for the Dustdevils, with a .380 (23 kills on 50 attempts with four errors) mark.  Miaje Hubbard leads the team with 33 kills.
 
 
Scouting Southern Nazarene
 
The Crimson Storm (3-1) enter the match on a three-match winning streak. Southern Nazarene rallied from a two-set deficit to knock off East Central on Tuesday (Sept. 9).
 
Five different players average more than 1.5 kills per set with Taylor Jacobs leading the way with 58 kills in 16 sets played (3.63 kills per set). She also leads the team with a .299 hitting percentage. Emilee Crawford adds 2.06 kills per set.
 
Abbey Bell leads the team with exactly four digs per set (64 digs in 16 sets). However, the defense is adept at blocking as Southern Nazarene averages 2.69 blocks per set. Emily Dick adds 1.44 b/s (23 blocks in 16 sets) while Taylor Jacobs has 1.13 b/s (18 blocks in 16 sets)
 
 
Scouting Central Oklahoma
 
The Bronchos are still perfect for the season, with a 6-0 record after going 4-0 at the Henderson State Classic.  Those wins included a 3-0 win over Henderson and a 3-1 over Southeastern from the Great American Conference. UCO has a clear advantage over its opponents across the stat sheet, including a .337 (264 kills on 572 attempts with 71 errors) to .073 (163 kills and 588 attempts with 120 errors) mark in hitting percentage.
 
Allison Barr has the top attack percentage so far this season at .552 (53 kills on 92 attempts with five) and adds 10 block assists.  Barbara Jackson is also a key all-around player with a .319 (50 kills and 113 attempts with 14 errors) hitting percentage, nine service aces and 32 digs.
 
 
Next Up
 
The Cowgirls open up both home and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next weekend for a trio of matches. Highlands battles Metro State on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m., Colorado School of Mines on Friday at 5 p.m., and Colorado Christian on Saturday at 7 p.m.
