LAKEWOOD and DENVER, Colo. – It will be an usual trip to Denver, Colorado, as the New Mexico Highlands soccer team (3-2-1, 0 -1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) play both Colorado Christian (3-2-2, 0-2-1 RMAC) and #23 Metropolitan State University of Denver (4-1-1, 1-0-1 RMAC). The Cowgirls take on the Cougars Friday morning (Sept. 26) at 11 a.m. before taking on the Roadrunners Sunday (Sept. 28) at noon.
Highlands will be looking to rebound from a tough week in which it tied CSU-Pueblo and lost to Fort Lewis on a late goal. Freshman goalie
Sarah Beecher is tied for third in the conference with three solo shutouts (she has a fourth shared shutout) through six games. Sophomore
Anyssa Dagnino is third in the conference with three goals.
The Cowgirls are 14th in the nation with a shutout in 2/3rds of their games. Freshman
Mallory Bostic is 27th in the nation with four assists for the season.
Scouting Colorado Christian Both teams will be looking for that elusive first conference win bright and early Friday morning when the Cowgirls take on the Cougars at 11 a.m.
While Colorado Christian cannot find that RMAC win column, the Cowgirls will need to take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself. Highlands leads the RMAC with 97 shots on the season, but the Cougars are third in the conference and 27th in the nation with a goals-against average of 0.537.
Goalie Shaya Lawrence is 42nd in the nation and third in the conference by saving 86.4 percent of the shots she faces.
#23 MSU Denver Highlands will face a stiff test when it faces the nationally-ranked Roadrunners on Sunday. Last season, the Cowgirls stunned MSU Denver in Colorado, 3-2. Sophomore
Anyssa Dagnino scored the winning goal just 33 seconds into the second half of the game on Oct. 27, 2003, as both teams went scoreless the final 44:27.
The Roadrunners also have a shutout in 2/3rds of their games, so a scoreless draw would not be the most unlikely of outcomes.
MSU Denver is not a high-powered offense as it is 121st in the nation with only 1.5 goals per game, but goalie Breanna Flores grabs saves on 86.2 shots she faced. The Roadrunners do pass around the goals as five different players have scored, four of which have two goals.
Next Up It will be another split weekend as the Cowgirls will host Colorado School of Mines on Friday (Oct. 3) at 7 p.m., before making the trip to Gunnison, Colorado, to take on a Western State. The Mountaineers are receiving votes in the latest NCAA Division II soccer poll. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
