Hot Shooting, Bench Pushes Adams State Past Cowboys, 100-59

ALAMOSA Colo. – The Cowboys bench was outscored 61-17 while the Grizzlies shot 54.7 percent – including 62.1 percent in the first half, as New Mexico Highlands (1-13, 1-9 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) completed a busy week with a 100-59 loss to Adams State (8-4, 5-4 RMAC) Saturday night (Jan. 10).

Adams State scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back. Marcus Hall, who had 10 points and a Grizzlies' high six boards, started with a layup before two free throws by Michael Middlebrooks. Shakir Smith, who had 13 points, made a layup and Mike Hemsley hit a jumper. Middlebrooks and Hemsley followed with a layup to put the Grizzlies up 12. A dunk by junior Kaylen Shane, who narrowly missed a double-double with 11 boards and nine points, gave Highlands its first points of the game.

The Grizzlies never led by less than double-digits the rest of the game.

The Cowboys outrebounded Adams State 34-33 in the game. Junior Jonathon Mines led Highlands with 12 points while sophomore Ricky Norris came off the bench with 10. Freshman Joe Anaya also had 10 points.

The Cowboys return home after five games in two weeks when they take on Chadron State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
