Wrestling Closes Weekend With Win against Simon Fraser

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The New Mexico Highlands wrestling team (4-0) finished a dominating weekend with a 33-9 win over fellow Western Region-foe Simon Fraser.
 
With the Cowboys up 6-0 after a forfeit win by redshirt sophomore Tre Humphrey at 133 pounds, redshirt junior Dan Gaylor recorded a second period fall against Matthew Cheung at 149 to push the lead to 12-0. After a decision went to Simon Fraser at 149, freshman Kellen Pelzel picked up his own second period pin against Victor Kwan as Highlands went up 18-3.
 
Redshirt junior Juan Alvarado won by forfeit at 165 to push the lead to 24-3. The Cowboys fell by decision at 174, but senior Easton Hargrave picked up a tight 11-9 win against Joshua Kim 184. Redshirt Sophomore Luis Terrazas need all of 28 seconds to pin Ben Smyth for the final individual match win for Highlands at 197.
 
For Simon Fraser, Kenji Yamisjita won in an extra time against redshirt sophomore Orlando Guerra 6-4 (SV 1) at 149. Morgan Smith knocked off junior JB Bechtloff at 174 and Sean Molle beat redshirt sophomore Cody Marquez at heavyweight, 10-4 as Highlands claimed the 33-9 win.
 
Highlands wrestling returns to action next Saturday (Jan. 17) for the Midwest Duals in Kearney, Nebraska. The Cowboys will have four duals beginning at 8 a.m.
 
In the lone exhibition match, redshirt sophomore Jacob Espana won a decision against Oscar Bulaqui at 125 pounds, 9-3.
