KEARNEY, Neb. – Facing still competition against in-region opponents, the New Mexico Highlands wrestling team (6-3) went 1-3 in the Midwest Duals, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Nebraska, Saturday (Jan. 17). The Cowboys defeated Newman, 37-6 before falling to Fort Hays State, 34-10, in the finale of the morning session. Facing a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes in the afternoon, the Cowboys lost to San Francisco State, 41-6, before knocking off California Baptist, 35-9.
 
Redshirt junior Juan Alvarado went 3-1 on the day with a pin and a decision. With Newman trying to rally against the Cowboys, he turned in a big 5-2 decision against Noel Torres to open up a Highlands 18-6 lead. Alvarado was one of two winners against Fort Hays State, pinning Kregg Clarke to close out the second period in their match. After a tough 6-4 loss to Vince Aboytes against San Francisco State, he knocked off Alec Smith of California Baptist in a tight dual, 5-4.
 
Senior Easton Hargrave at 184 and redshirt junior Tre Humphrey at 133 both went 2-2 on the day. Hargrave sealed the win against Newman with a first period pin of Dalton Weidl. After a 10-6 loss against John Inman of Fort Hays State, he rebounded with a 9-5 win against Johnny Costa of San Francisco State. He finished the day with a 16-6 loss to Jacob Waste of Cal Baptist.
 
Humphrey won by forfeit in his first match of the day before being pinned twice. He took down Cal Baptist's Joshua Ho-Lopez in 3:33 to end the day.
 
Also against Newman, redshirt sophomore Jacob Espana won a close 9-8 decision at 125. After a forfeit win at 133, the Cowboys all of a sudden found themselves clinging to a 9-6 lead after losses at 141 and 149. Freshman Kellen Pelzel stopped Newman with a second period pin at 157. Alvarado (165) and junior JB Bechtloff (174) won by decision before Hargrave sealed the match with a pin at 185.
 
Redshirt sophomore Luis Terrazas won by forfeit at 197 before classmate Cody Marquez recorded the major against Lex Plummer, 12-2, at heavyweight.
 
The Cowboys return to action in more than a week in their home opener against Adams State at 7 p.m. on Jan. 29.
