LAS VEGAS, N.M. – What a day for history!
For the first time since the program was reinstated, the New Mexico Highlands wrestling team (7-3, 1-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) knocked off Adams State (0-6, 0-6 RMAC) 27-15 Thursday night (Jan. 29) in a wrestling dual at the John A. Wilson Complex.
"This was a great, historic win not just for these guys, but for the program as a whole," head coach
Doug Moses said. "We hope to use this momentum from this big victory to take New Mexico Highlands wrestling to new heights. I am so proud of our guys for not getting frustrated and ending the dual with three-straight majors."
After both teams stood tied at six after two weight classes, Cowboys redshirt junior
Dan Gaylor went to work at 141. After a pair of takedowns for Gaylor and a takedown for J.C. Henderson, Gaylor took the lead for good with an escape in the first period. Henderson chose down for the second and quickly escaped to knot the match at five. Gaylor got a takedown and Henderson had an escape as Highlands took a 7-6 lead into the third period. Gaylor chose down in the third and rolled his way to the reversal for the 9-6 edge, his biggest of the match. Henderson got an escape, but Gaylor held on for the 9-7 win and the Cowboys 9-6 dual lead.
At the 149 weight class, redshirt freshman
Reis Humphrey exerted control to put Highlands up six. Humphrey had a pair of takedowns, while Adams State's Devin Vasquez recorded a pair of escapes to give Humphrey a 4-2 lead after the first period. Humphrey got a reversal compared to another Vasquez escape as Humphrey took a 6-3 lead into the third. There, Humphrey took control and flirted with a major. Starting up, he quickly rolled Vasquez over for three back points. After a Vasquez escape, Humphrey got a last takedown. However Vasquez avoided the major with an escape and with the riding point, Humphrey took a 12-5 decision and bumped the Highlands advantage to 12-6.
Freshman
Kellen Pelzel got a decision at 157 to put Highlands up by nine. After Pelzel led 2-1 after the first period, Adams State's Jacob Deaguero took a slim lead with a takedown in the second. Both wrestlers exchanged reversals and Pelzel ended the period with an escape as the match stood tied at five going into the third period. Pelzel took over there with a pair of takedowns for the 9-7 match win.
The Grizzlies tied the match at 15 with a decision at 165 and a pin at 174, but the Cowboys closed with three straight majors as Highlands won the dual by 12. Senior
Easton Hargrave dominated at 184, allowing just an escape in the third period to Mario Garcia. After a takedown in each of the first two periods, Hargrave chose down in the third and then went to work. After an escape, Hargrave recorded the takedown and tilted Garcia for three points. With the riding point, Hargrave won 10-1.
Redshirt sophomore
Luis Terrazas sealed the match at 197 as for the second-straight match, the Cowboys allowed only a third period escape to Amer Tipura. Terrazas quickly got the takedown and a pair of three back point moves put him up 8-0 after one. An escape and takedown extended the lead to 11-0 and a takedown in the third and a riding point gave Terrazas the 14-1 win.
In the last bout at heavyweight, redshirt sophomore
Cody Marquez turned a slim 3-0 lead after two periods into a major win. After a scoreless first period, Marquez started on top and turned Adams State's Austin Andrade for the 3-0 lead. In the last period, Marquez chose down and got an escape before wrapping two stall points around an Andrade takedown. Marquez got the escape and with the riding point, Marquez got the 10-2 major to put the exclamation point on the night.
Adams State recorded a pair of falls on the night as #3 Jerry Huff pinned redshirt sophomore
Jacob Espana at 125 in 1:46. Mark Mabry recorded the second period pin of redshirt freshman
Hayden Riggs at 174 and Justin Samora won a 3-1 decision against redshirt junior
Juan Alvarado at 165.
The Cowboys return to action tomorrow against the Falcons of Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The dual is set for 5 p.m.
