Close Matches go to Air Force as Wrestling Falls 25-10

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Five matches were decided by two points or less, but three of them went to the Falcons as the New Mexico Highlands wrestling team (7-4) fell to Air Force (5-5) 25-10 Friday night in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
 
However, the Cowboys did jump out to a 7-0 lead courtesy of redshirt juniors Tre Humphrey at 133 and Dan Gaylor at 141. Humphrey found himself in a hole early as he was taken down by Lyle Plummer, but that went on to be the only points in the match he would give up. An escape and takedown gave Humphrey the lead into the second period. In the second, he started on top and used back points to open up a 7-2 lead heading into the third. There, Plummer was dinged for a pair of stalling points and an escape for Humphrey gave him the major decision, 10-2.
 
The first close match went to Highlands as Gaylor won 3-2 at 141. After a scoreless first, Air Force's David Walker chose bottom and got the escape to take the 1-0 lead. A Gaylor takedown and another Walker escape tied the match at two heading into the third. Gaylor chose bottom and got the escape for the one-point win.
 
Air Force won the next four matches to take a 13-7 lead, but senior Easton Hargrave cut the lead in half at 184. Both grapplers stood scoreless after one and a single escape by William Baker put him up 1-0 in the third. However, Hargrave chose down and got the escape and takedown for the 3-1 lead. Baker got a final escape, but that would be it as Hargrave held on for the 3-2 win.
 
An Air Force pin by Jack Carda against redshirt sophomore Luis Terrazas at 197 and a tight 4-2 win for Marcus Malecek against redshirt sophomore Cody Marquez at 285 clinched the match for the home team.
 
In other action, Dane Robbins beat redshirt freshman Reis Humphrey at 149, 8-5. Samuel Kreimier claimed a 6-4 win against freshman Kellen Pelzel at 157. Michael Billengsly knocked off redshirt junior Juan Alvarado at 165, 6-4, before the Falcons finished off the 13 unanswered point run as Adam Jackson majored freshman Jacob Hawthorne at 174, 17-7.
 
Drew Romero beat redshirt sophomore Jacob Espana at 125, 10-4.
 
The Cowboys kick off a busy week with three duals in four days Tuesday (Feb. 3) at CSU-Pueblo. The dual is set to begin at 7 p.m.
