Volleyball falls after hot start

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M.- The Cowgirls started with a stellar first set, dominating Colorado Mesa on all cylinders. Despite the strong first set, the Cowgirls (4-9, 1-5 RMAC) fell to Colorado Mesa (7-7, 5-1 RMAC) in four sets, 25-16, 14-25, 15-25, 24-26, Friday Night (Oct. 2).

In the first set, the Cowgirls dominated from the very get go by starting with four straight points. Throughout the set, they were in rhythm and were scoring points with ease.

Six players had multiple kills in the set with Senior Andrea Nunez and sophomore Talise Babbitt leading the set with four and three respectively.

The Mavericks had no answers for the Cowgirls' dominance. The Cowgirls went on a 3-0 run, with the last point coming from Kristin Woody, to perfectly end a spectacular set.

Set 2 was the complete opposite as the Mavs were the dominant ones as they had 15 kills with two errors.

Both teams traded the lead until they were both tied at 11. That was when would Mavs take over and go on a 11-0 run to gain the momentum they needed to build a lead and secure the second set.

Errors cost the girls the third set. Roughly a third of Mavs' points came from Cowgirls errors.

Caroline Hansen, who had a double-double (10 kills, 11 digs), managed to get two kills early in the set to stop the Mavs' momentum twice but it was not enough as they would carry the momentum from the second set to win the third 25-15.

In the fourth set, the Cowgirls would come back to life and show they were not going down without a fight. The fourth set would mirror a boxing fight, as both teams would trade blows until the very end.

The Mavs would have 15-12 lead until the Cowgirls got two kills from Nunez and two helpful errors to give the girls a 16-15 lead.

In the end, timeouts proved to be critical as both teams scored points after their own timeouts. Our girls would be down 22-20 before a timeout, and as a result they would go on a 3-0 run with two points from Tianna Matthews, who had two block solos and two block assists in the game, to give them the lead. The Mavs would call a timeout this time and tie the game soon after.

A kill from Babbitt would give the girls a point from winning the set but the Mavs came back and scored the final three points to win the set and match.

The Cowgirls host Westminster College tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3 at home at 7p.m. Live stats and video will be available.
