Greyhounds too much for Cowgirls

Box Score PORTALES, N.M. – The volleyball team suffered another loss as tonight they fell to ENMU in straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-22).  The Cowgirls struggled against the Greyhounds serving, as the Greyhounds had 12 service aces in the match.

In the first set, both teams would go back and forth and be tied at 6-6. The Greyhounds would then build a five-point lead with kills and Cowgirl errors. After a Highlands timeout, the Cowgirls would have a 3-point run that would be quickly answered with a 3-point run by the Greyhounds. The Cowgirls would not get another run together until they were down 23-15. They would score the next three points but it was not enough, as the Greyhounds would score the last two points to win the first set.

Second set was the Cowgirls weakest set. The Cowgirls only had six kills in the set and five attacking errors. Four of their six kills came at the beginning, as both teams would be tied 5-5. Right after, the Greyhounds would score the next six points. The Greyhounds would keep attacking and build a 22-11 lead over the Cowgirls. The Cowgirls would then use the Greyhounds mistakes to cut the lead with a four-point run. Afterwards, the Greyhounds would score the next three and have a two set lead over the girls.

In the third set, the Cowgirls would have a good start as they would have the lead for the first nine points of the game. Their lead would be short lived, as the Greyhounds would use Cowgirl errors and thier own aces to give them a 10-5 lead.

Being down 10-5, the Cowgirls would keep fighting and start chipping away at the lead. Highlands would use three kills from Kristin Woody, Tianna Matthews, and Katie Trammel, all assisted by Tarissa Mellin, to tie the set at 15-15.

After an Eastern New Mexico timeout, the Greyhounds would slowly build a lead till the score was 23-18 Greyhounds. The Cowgirls would then use Greyhound errors and a kill by Andrea Nunez to cut the deficit to one. Being down 23-22, the Cowgirls could not stop the Greyhounds, and the Greyhounds would score the next two points to win the match
.
The Cowgirls return home for Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend and Senior Day as they face Regis University and Chadron State College on Oct. 23 and 24. Live stats and video will be available.
